Newton PTO Meeting Minutes
Feb 6th 2013
Attendence: Erica Burns, Tara Cloutier, Chris Derose, Maureen Ryan
1. Upcoming
a. Fundraiser wrap up- Finalized a few details about volunteers to help on March 8th.
b. Coins for Coats- Discussed contacting the recorder for an article/mention in the paper and Kevin lined up a photographer to come in on Friday after the all-school
c. Dr. Suess’ Birthday- Erica talked about how snacks & decorations weren’t needed after she talked with Ruth. Ruth suggested cupcakes during the day like we have done in the past. Due to nutritional guidelines we are no longer able to do this. It was decided to not do anything extra at this time.
d. Bookfair/Dance update 5/17- Maureen talked with Tami from Mountain View dance about coordinating this and she agreed for a fee on $100 (?) and will provide music. We will do this in conjunction with the book fair with a date of May 17th. Erica discussed the idea of having shopping hours in school as our revenue was down quite a bit compared to last year’s book fair, but only having it open the same day as the night fair, and only open to those who have money to shop. The group agreed that it was a good idea. Decided on both book fair and Dance in the gym, with snacks in the lobby.
e. MCAS support- in the past PTO has provided small bottles of water and mint gum for 3rd graders during testing, and we inquired if this was something the school would like us to do again this year, and Maureen said yes. Chris will pick up the items.
f. Event for April- Erica talked about doing something for April and we discussed some family events versus an assembly type thing. We voted on doing an assembly as it would be easier for our small group to handle. We discussed some ideas and Maureen said she’d make some calls and inquire.
2. Treasurer’s report
a. Balances 3982.34 à pto $3947.28, Art $35.06
b. Scholastic news- Several teachers showed interest in the scholastic News for Next year. We asked Maureen if grant money would be available for next year, and it was unknown. She will follow up and let us know.
c. Field Trips- we discussed our funds for field trips and needing to know where groups will be going. Maureen will get updated field trip info from teachers and get it to use
3. Other items
a. Briefly mentioned Teacher appreciation week which is the first full week in May, just so it is on our minds
b. Garden Movie night- Erica brought up the idea of a Movie day at the Garden cinemas at the end of the year to help us get some funds for the beginning of next school year. It was briefly discussed with positive feedback. We will discuss further next time
